Express your sympathy with flowers

ELIZABETH "LIBBY" JONES JACOBUS, 1937-2011
Libby was born in Stamford, Texas in 1937 to Dorothy Jones Brock and John Allen Brock. John Brock died in 1941 and Dotsy later married Truman Jones, who adopted Libby as she was only four years-old at the untimely death of her dad. Truman was a wonderful parent to Libby until his death in 2003. When Libby's children came along Dotsy and Truman were their much beloved "Mammy" and "Pappy."

Libby grew up in Odessa and Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High School in 1954. She attended Christian College in Missouri, then TCU in Fort Worth. She was a member of the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta. Libby married George H. Jacobus in 1957 and two children were born in Midland, Annie and Bill. The family moved to Arkansas; briefly Fort Smith, and then Little Rock where Lacy and Todd were born respectively. Libby was active in the Junior Leagues of Midland, as well as Fort Smith and Little Rock, Arkansas. She divorced in 1970 and then returned to school to earn an M.A. in Communication at the University of New Mexico. Libby was not only a good communicator, she was a great listener. She settled in Dallas in 1980, moving back to Midland from 1997 to 2005 to care for her parents. She was active in Presbyterian Churches everywhere she lived, but had an open-minded approach to spirituality incorporating philosophies from many other religious teachings. Her wide range of interests was exemplified by her devotion to both NPR/Public Television and Fox News. She loved to read, especially British mysteries, and instilled the love of books in her children.

She was interested in alternative healing and nutrition practices starting in the 1960's, long before everyone else realized their benefits. She refused her kids soft drinks and white bread, insisting instead on whole grains, and disappointing roasted soybeans and fruit juice yogurt pops as snacks. With the glaring exception of cancer, Libby had no other health problems and as this recent photo attests, was beautiful to the end.

Libby worked in one form or another of real estate throughout her life, including renovations and sales agenting. She was an avid tennis player and enjoyed interior decorating, travel and time with friends. A lover of the arts, she played piano, and enjoyed classical, folk, and soft rock music ranging from Bach and Vivaldi to Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart and Creedence Clearwater Revival. She painted in oils and participated in numerous community theaters over the years, passing a love of theater on to her children as well.

Libby treasured her relationships with her family and her numerous friendships from childhood and throughout her life. People were drawn to her ease, balance, strength, and grace. True to herself, she had a solid sense of identity. Libby was independent, dignified, and ultimately a perpetually positive optimist. She possessed a moral compass that the grandchildren referenced and emulated by quipping "What Would Libby Do?" Like her animal-loving parents before her, she was devoted to the many fine dogs she had over the years including, but not limited to, Gizmo, Molly, Levon, Emmitt and Zelda. Libby also had a solid stubborn streak and a way of putting anything that disturbed her peace, right out of her mind.

In August of 2009, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of small cell, high grade neuroendocrine cancer in her colon which later appeared in her lungs and liver. After two years of treatment Libby went under hospice care in September of this year. Faith Presbyterian Hospice, a non-profit organization, provided exceptional care and comfort for Libby and her family. Libby died peacefully at home in Dallas surrounded by her children on December 1, 2011.

She is survived by her children, Ann Jacobus Kordahl and husband V. James Kordahl, William R. Jacobus and wife Crystal Belisle Jacobus, Sarah Lacy Jacobus, and Todd H. Jacobus and wife Shana Vickers Jacobus; Libby's grandchildren, Ariana Victoria Jacobus, James Jacobus Kordahl, John Truman Kordahl, Caroline Elizabeth Kordahl, John "Jack" Fielding Ficklen, George Vernon Kordahl, Andrew Truman Jacobus, William Brock Jacobus; great-granddaughter Evelyn Virginia Hertenstein, as well as cousins Susan Jones Hereford, Jennifer Jones Doughtery, O. K. ( Skipper ) Jones, III, Kenneth Allen Jones, John Gary Jones, John Tom Brock, and Luana Brock Rexrode and their families.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials to Presbyterian Communities and Services Foundation for Faith Presbyterian Hospice. Please mail checks to 6100 Colwell Blvd., Suite 225, Irving, Texas 75039, or go online at www.prescs.org/foundation. Arrangements are by Aria Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on January 14, 2012 at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas. Libby's remains will be placed in the Columbarium there in a family-only service the week of December 5th.
